Nelson-Atkins painting is a USPS stamp

Thomas Moran‘s painting “Grand Canyon” from the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art has been reproduced as a USPS “American Treasures” series. The selection process began a year ago when USPS began consulting with curators Stephanie Knappe and Stacey Sherman.This painting along with three other landscapes were chosen from Hudson River School masters, including Thomas Cole, Asher B. Durand and Frederic Edwin Church to be included in this series.

The Art Institute of Chicago owns Cole’s Distant View of Niagara Falls (1830); Durand’s “Summer Afternoon” (1865) is from the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Church painting, “Sunset” (1856), is from the collection of … Read more …

“Grand Canyon” is the first painting from Nelson-Atkins to be chosen. The Hudson River School stamps (Forever Stamps) are $9.80 for a booklet of 20.
